Students exploring 3D printing at Franklin Center for Innovation: Tech Center

According to the Oxford Dictionary, 3D printing is "the action or process of making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many thin layers of a material in succession."

In the 1980s, 3D printing techniques were considered suitable only for the production of functional or aesthetic prototypes, according to Wikipedia. The process was mainly used in traditional manufacturing settings and over the years has "gained importance in the field of engineering due to its many benefits. Some of the benefits include enabling faster prototyping, reducing manufacturing costs, increasing product customization and improving product quality.

DESIGN. PRINT. PRESERVE.

A historic places preservation project in digital form

Do you have an interest in preserving and educating your local community on the rich history of Kentucky?

With 3DKY, we are working with the Franklin Center for Innovation's Makerspace to build and print 3D models of historic landmarks from across the state. Our mission is to use tangible, educational models to help increase spatial reasoning and awareness, aid in preservation efforts, as well as inform future generations about our state’s past. We’re aiming to create a full topographical map of the entire state!

Imagine walking through a space filled with vibrant replicas of crucial parts of Kentucky’s history! We’ve worked hard so that each model is detailed enough to bring these places alive — helping us relive experiences from our past while learning new lessons that can shape our future. This project will be an incredible opportunity for students and visitors alike - allowing them to explore and celebrate their heritage at every turn.

Support us today by donating or spreading the word about 3DKY's mission! Let's work together towards preserving Kentucky's valuable resources!
